The sauce–that’s the first thing you’ll see when your order arrives at your table. Thick, creamy and decadent, it shouts richness and heaviness–until you take your first bite that is. Despite its appearance the sauce is not that heavy and compliments the meat underneath very well. And what a piece of meat it is, or rather pieces as the case may be–tender and juicy tenderloin cut into bite sized pieces and cooked to perfection. And well it should be because the tenderloin was lovingly and tediously processed and prepared on site by restaurant owner Loisa Querubin–this is not your everyday “commercialized” fare. With steamed vegetables on the side you can have your fill of this heavenly dish for P190.00–well worth the money.

I was excited to learn that there’s a Vietnamese noodle house that opened in the city recently. I love vietnamese Noodles particularly Beef Pho and somehow I only get to eat when I’m in Manila. So I visited Vietyum Noodle House as soon as I had the chance. It is along Timawa avenue (not quite sure about the street name) but it’s right beside Iloilo Doctor’s College. There’s nothing fancy about the place but I felt comfortable about the whole set-up anyway. And since they ran out of Beef Pho, I ordered Chicken Pho (Pho Ga). I loved the soup. They served it with a spicy sauce/paste and Calamansi (Calamondin) on the side. I just wished they didn’t serve their noodles in a stainless bowl because somehow it affected the taste of the soup. Ceramic bowls would have been better.

Somehow the adage “First impression lasts” holds true when it comes to food tasting. On my first visit at Mooon Cafe Iloilo, I ordered their Grilled Tuna Belly. The serving was quite big especially for someone who has a (figuratively) large appetite. I love food but I can only eat so much. Too bad I get full instantly. The fish was not overcooked as it retained its “juicy-ness”. It went well with soy sauce and vinegar. I really loved their Grilled Tuna Belly that on my second visit, I ordered for it again. Hah! I think the word had spread in Iloilo city already – Mooon Cafe dishes bring delight to food loving Ilonggos!

If you are looking for a new “pasalubong” (a gift from someone arriving from a trip) to bring home after a trip to Iloilo city, you should check out Margec’s Cream Horn. For most people visiting Iloilo, coming here means bringing home Biscocho, Butter Scotch, and Pinasugbo. But in case you want to bring something new to your friends and family back home, this Cream Horn is something all of you will certainly enjoy. The Cream Horn shell is a flaky puff pastry and has a coarse decorative sugar as it’s coating. The sweet and creamy filling is a mixture of butter, sugar, and milk. As far as I know, this original Cream Horn from Margec’s had been around for years but probably it has not really gone mainstream in terms of promotion. I have also tried other versions of Cream Horn here in Iloilo but has not found one that can top that of Margec’s. The store is located along the highway going to the new Iloilo airport. If you are coming from the city, Margec’s is on the right side of the road after the Coca Cola Bottling Plant. You just have to drive a bit slow because unfortunately, their signboard is not that prominent.

Price: P15.00 each
